Year 5
Year 5 Home Learning
Your child will have received a year 5 home learning pack which contains key tasks which will support your child when continuing with their learning at home.
Within the pack you will find SPAG, reading, writing and maths activities alongside a big project which your child can work on from home. The core SPAG, reading, writing and maths activities are all based around work which has previously been completed and is a key opportunity for your child to revisit and reapply previously taught skills.
Maths:
In year 5, the expectation is that each child will be able to recall their times tables up to 12×12. Your child will have also received their Times Table Rock Stars logins so that they are able to log in at home and should be doing so every day, to further support them with their learning of the times tables.
During parents evening, a number of parents asked for further advice on how to best support their child at home with their arithmetic, I will post a list of YouTube videos below which can be accessed to further support you in supporting your child with their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Literacy:
We have worked extremely hard on our reading pace, fluency and comprehension this year and it is important that your child continues to read at home during this period to ensure that they continue to improve their reading pace and expand their vocabulary, in preparation for year 6. You will also find within the home learning pack a number of comprehension tasks to be completed each week, all of the children have had a broad range of experience when answering such comprehension questions and again, this is a perfect opportunity to revisit and reapply such skills.
Big Project
I have also attached a ‘Big Project’ idea where the children can think about designing their own environmentally friendly theme park. This can be displayed in any way, whether that be a poster, a 3D model, a blog, a vlog ect. I would like the children to use and apply their knowledge and understanding from the work which we completed during our book study in January.
Reading
Download the app “BorrowBox” to enable you to borrow e-books from your local library. Log in with your library card number and pincode and you can borrow up to 6 books at a time.

Dear Year 5
It’s Miss Welsh here. I hope both you and your families are safe and well. As Miss Riley and Miss Smith are now teaching in school full time, I will be setting your home learning for the next two weeks and responding to your emails.
The planning on the website has been updated for weeks beginning 6.7.20 and 13.7.20 and follows the same format that you have previously been used to. You will find daily maths, three arithmetic papers (if children can have a go at between five and ten questions daily, along with the White Rose maths if possible) plus daily English.
The topic for the next two weeks is the water cycle. I have uploaded several activities and information sheets, and you may also find the link below useful.
- Water cycle power point
- Water cycle diagram
- Water cycle key terms
- Water cycle – Danny the droplet story
- Water cycle activities sheet

If you have any questions, as always please use this email address and I will endeavour to reply to you as soon as I can. As I’m not familiar with all of your names, if you could write ‘Year 5’ in the subject box this will make it easier to spot your emails.
