Governors Information

I’ve been a governor at Moorfield Primary School since 2013 and took up the role of Chair in November 2017. I have been a parent governor and I am now a co-opted governor. I have had one child pass through the school and onto high school, with a second child going into year 6 in September 2018.

In 2017 the governing body carried out a review of governance and have been working on the actions from this external review to improve our performance. Some of the actions are:

  • The governors now meet twice a term as full governing body meetings. This improves the communication with all governors present at the meetings rather than small subcommittee meetings looking at specific topics.
  • The governors have a specific action plan which we work through and allows us to monitor our impact as governors.
  • The governors have established a training matrix to ensure that all governors are working to continually develop their skills and ensure that the minimum training is completed to give the governors the necessary knowledge to carry out their duties.
  • Annually the governors complete a skills audit which identifies strengths and weaknesses and forms part of the training and development plan.
  • Ensure statutory requirements regarding policies are met and up to date.
Establishing the strategic direction, by:
  • Setting and ensuring clarity of vision, values, and objectives for the school
  • Agreeing the school improvement strategy with priorities and targets
  • Meeting statutory duties
Ensuring accountability, by:
  • Monitoring the educational performance of the school and progress towards agreed targets
  • Performance managing the Headteacher
  • Engaging with stakeholders
Overseeing financial performance, by:
  • Agreeing the budget
  • Monitoring spending against the budget
  • Ensuring money is well spent and value for money is obtained
  • Ensuring risks to the organisation are managed

Governors set the aims and objectives for the school. They set the policies and targets for achieving those aims and objectives. They monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making and act as a source of challenge and support to the headteacher.

The headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing board.

The school’s recent OFSTED visit highlighted some improvements to be made but also highlighted the good foundations Ms Heyes and the senior leadership team are building upon to improve the school is performance. The improvement plan was shared with Councillors from Halton Borough Council at a meeting with Ms Heyes and myself in November 2017.

There have been many changes in the expectations of pupils in my time as a governor and I know the school and the pupils have adapted to the challenges placed upon them.

The school continues to strive and get the best out of the pupils and they need your help and support as parents / carers to ensure children read, complete their homework and support them and the school in their general learning.

The fundamental objective of Moorfield Primary School, shared by governors and staff, is to provide a child-centred education which should give every child the opportunity to fulfil his or her potential. We are conscious that the school has a profound effect on the development of the citizens of tomorrow , as well as contributing to their individual successes.
